Laguna Beach California

Laguna Beach California

They never have to go far to drink a glass or two of their favorite wine. The addition of a custom wine cellar California can greatly enhance the aesthetic aspect of a home, and even increase its value.

Take a look at this custom wine cellar California project in Laguna Beach by Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, a master wine cellar builder in California and several other states.

Wine Storage Racks – An Essential Component of a Home Wine Room

One of the most important components of a wine room is the wine storage racks.

The right combination of wine-racking systems will help maximize the bottle storage capacity of a wine room. This will also provide an efficient wine storage and display solution that will facilitate proper wine aging, correct bottle placement, and ease of product recognition.

Wine Storage Racks

Wine Storage Racks

The Laguna Beach home wine room project, completed last spring, showcases a range of wine storage and display racks, which helped achieve a total storage capacity of 837 wine bottles.

Coastal Custom Wine Cellar installers and Designers also provided custom wine racking solutions for the client’s collection of large format bottles and wood cases. All of the racks were made out of unfinished premium redwood.

The client chose premium redwood because it is one of the most sought-after wood species in wine rack construction. It is known for its longevity, natural earth tones, and workability. The wood’s natural beauty makes staining and finishing unnecessary, although wood stains can still be applied if desired.

Quarter Round Display and Single Bottle Wine Storage Racks

Quarter Round Display and Single Bottle Wine Storage Racks

The left side wall of custom wine cellar California features quarter-round displays, single-bottle wine cellar racks with display rows, and wood case storage.

Solid quarter-round display shelving is not only an excellent place to display large format bottles (e.g. magnums, double magnums), but also various wine accouterments, such as decanters. The display shelf also makes for a beautiful end piece to a wine-racking system.

The 750 ml bottle openings of single bottle wine cellar racks measure 3 ¾” x 3 ¾,” so they can hold just about any size bottle, including standard champagne, Oregon Pinots, and California Blue Chips. In addition, the individual bottle slots have hand-sanded edges, to protect wine labels from scratching or tearing.

In between the single bottle storage racks is a high-reveal display row. Display racks with high reveal feature pitch bottles to a 15-degree angle that offers full visibility of wine labels, as well as allows continuous contact of the cork with the wine. Maintaining moisture in corks is crucial to cellaring wines, as it helps ensure the sealing quality of said corks.

The display row features LED lighting that illuminates some of the finest wine labels. Displays with high reveal are great tools for managing a large collection, since wines can be stored above and below the display area.

High Reveal Display Row with LED Lighting

This design promotes ease of selection and retrieval of wine bottles.

At the very bottom, wine cellar installers added custom-designed openings, wherein the client can store the wood cases that he loves to collect and display.

Towards the back wall of the Laguna Beach home wine room are more of the single-bottle wine cellar racks, with high-reveal display rows. Despite the oddly shaped corners and turns, wine cellar installers managed to maintain a smooth and flowing appearance by installing custom wine racks, which followed the contours of the wall.

As one comes to the right interior wall, it consists more of the same thing: individual bottle openings and a display row with high reveal design.

In this particular wall, the installers provided horizontal label forward display openings below the high-reveal display row. The openings can easily store several bottles, depending on the type of wine bottle.

High Reveal Display Row and Diamons Bins

High Reveal Display Row and Diamond Bins

Right below the label forward displays are open diamond bin components, for bulk storage. Diamond bins can hold a large number of different-sized wine bottles. This type of storage solution is ideal for wine collectors who purchase their wines in 6 packs or 12 lots.

The right side wall of this custom wine cellar California also features a standard arch with a tabletop, that serves as a serving and decanting area for wines. The whittle board design on the arch offers a stylish and elegant look to the Laguna Beach home wine room.

Puck lighting is provided to illuminate the tabletop area. Above the arch is an opening for large-format bottle storage, and below it are additional slots for individual bottle storage.

Installing a Wine Cellar Cooling System for Temperature and Humidity Control

CellarPro Wine Cellar Cooling System

For temperature and humidity control, the installers supplied a CellarPro self-contained wine cellar cooling system. CellarPro is known for its quality and efficient wine cellar cooling equipment and has been a trusted partner of Coastal Custom Wine Cellar Installers for years.

CellarPro’s self-contained wine cellar cooling system does not require installation by a professional HVAC technician. An opening was created on the right side wall to accommodate the cooling equipment.

For this particular home wine room, the wine cellar cooling system exhausts warm air to the adjacent garage area.

Completing the Look of the Wine Cellar with a Lighting System and Wine Cellar Door

The lighting system was provided by the client, along with the flooring material and interior paint. The lighting fixture used is a directional, low-profile track lighting that can be adjusted to feature various areas of the wine storage space.

The beauty of the wine cellar space can be viewed from the outside, through a 30” x 80” Barolo-style dual pane glass door. The entry door features dual pane insulated glass, weather stripping, and automatic door sweeps, to ensure a nice, tight seal on the Laguna Beach residential wine room.

Home Wine Cellar California – A Wine Cellar Under Stairs Project in Cherry Hills

Beautiful custom wine cellars can be installed in any available living space of a home. For some of Coastal Custom Wine Cellars’ clients, they decided to convert a small closet, a garage, or an unused space in the kitchen, into a wine storage room.

Before the Wine Cellar Construction

Before the Wine Cellar Construction

For instance, this recently completed Coto de Caza home wine cellar project by Coastal Custom Wine Cellars involves converting a small, L-shaped under-the-stairwell closet into a fully functional home wine cellar space. This wine cellar under stairs has a total storage capacity of 404 wine bottles.

For this particular home wine cellar in California, the Coastal team combined the right mix of design elements and custom wine rack styles to create a custom wine cellar that not only provides excellent aesthetics but also maximizes the wine storage capacity of its limited space.

So how did Coastal Custom Wine Cellars convert a small closet space into a wine storage room?

The small size and intricate configuration of the closet space posed a challenge to the design team. Since Coastal Custom Wine Cellars had already done several wine cellar conversion projects, the design and construction went smoothly as planned.

The entrance to the Coto de Caza home wine cellar is tall enough for anyone to walk into the enclosure, but the ceiling quickly swoops down to a height of about 5 feet, following the sloping contours of the stairway.

Horizontal Display Wine Racks

Coto de Caza Home Wine Cellar Racks

Coto de Caza Home Wine Cellar Racks

Six-inch depth label forward horizontal display rows were installed on the left side wall, so as not to impede the entry, and to provide more room with which to move around the wine storage space.

Horizontal wine racks allow for a label forward orientation of wine bottles, that not only provides a full view of wine labels but also keeps the cork in constant contact with the wine.

Since the horizontal display racks sit right underneath the stairwell, they feature a stair step-down design, to accommodate the change in height of the ceiling.

Single Bottle Storage

The back wall of the Coto de Caza wine cellar under stairs project features individual bottle racking, a display row with high reveal, and X-bin racking. Single bottle wine racks have bottle openings that measure 3 3/4″ x 3 3/4″, which can hold most 750 ml wine bottles.

Below these are a series of X-bins that can accommodate multiple bottles of different sizes and shapes.

High Reveal Display Row

High Reveal Wine Display Row

High Reveal Wine Display Row

A high-reveal display row is an excellent display solution and management tool. It pitches wine bottles to a 15-degree angle that provides an eye-level display of wine labels, for easy identification and selection of wines. This allows wine collectors to efficiently organize similar wines above and below the display row.

Located deep in the Coto de Caza home wine cellar is the end wall that features a short racking system, which provides additional storage for individual bottles and case lots. This line of wine-racking solution is shorter than the rest because the space right above it was where the Coastal team mounted the climate control system.

Wine Cellar Climate Control Equipment

WhisperKOOL Split Wine Cellar Cooling System

WhisperKOOL Split Wine Cellar Cooling System

Efficient wine closets must have proper refrigeration equipment, to help maintain the ideal climate conditions for aging and storing wines. For the Coto de Caza wine cellar under stairs project, the Coastal team supplied a WhisperKOOL Platinum Mini Split System.

This compact cooling unit is ideal for small wine rooms or wine closets. The condensing unit of this refrigeration equipment can be located remotely, for ultra-quiet and efficient operation.

Wood Materials Used

Philippine Mahogany Wine Racks

Philippine Mahogany Wine Racks

In order to blend well with the chappo-stained Philippine mahogany wine racking system, as well as create an unusual appearance to the Coto de Caza home wine cellar project, reclaimed cooperage tongue and groove components from retired oak wine barrels were used as wine cellar flooring.

Cooperage series oak barrel flooring comes from 10 – 12-year-old wine barrels. This reclaimed wood component displays beautiful cooperage stamps and special markings of wineries and vintages.

Reclaimed wine barrel flooring products are a striking addition to wine storage rooms, whether they are small wine closets or wine cellar under stairs conversions because they provide a distinct atmosphere that evokes a sense of wine history.

Custom Wine Cellar Door

Since the wine cellar is a climate-controlled room, it is important to keep an air-tight seal.

To achieve this, and complete the look of the wine cellar under stairs project in Coto de Caza, the construction team installed a high-quality custom wine cellar door.

A Seville custom wine cellar door was chosen for this project. It features an operable wrought iron gate, placed over a dual-paned glass. Operable means it can be opened and closed, for cleaning and maintenance purposes.

Wine Cellar Artwork Painting by an Impressionist

Wine Cellar Art Painting on the Interior Walls and Ceiling

Wine Cellar Art Painting on the Interior Walls and Ceiling

The interior walls of the Coto de Caza home wine cellar California feature faux painting wine cellar artwork. The painting is a masterpiece of impressionist Janina Pazdan.

The artist created a grapevine paint theme and colors using light tones and graceful strokes, that resulted in beautiful wine cellar artwork, consisting of abstract images that lend a unique character to the wine cellar space.

Janina Pazdan is an impressionist artist who hails from Poland. She spent 10 years perfecting her craft in oil painting, ceramics, drawing, and sculpture at The Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland.

The masterpieces of Vincent Van Gogh, Edgar Degaz, Henre Toulouse-Lautrec, Edward Monet, and Diego Velazquez influenced her impressionistic style. Pazdan loves painting landscapes, oceanscapes, gardens, and flowers. Her artworks are often inspired by music and poetry.

Get Up-to-Date! What are the Latest Trends in Wine Cellar Racks?

Wine Storage and Display Racks for Wine Cellars

Wine storage and display racks are key components of proper wine storage.

Wine Storage and Display Racks

Wine Storage and Display Racks

Their function is not only to provide a system for storing, displaying, and organizing a wine collection, but also to facilitate the proper placement of wine bottles during storage.

Wine cellar racks are designed to hold bottles in a horizontal or tilted position, thereby allowing the continuous contact of the cork with the wine.

Keeping the cork moist is imperative, as this helps prevent it from drying out and shrinking, and consequently inhibits the entry of oxygen into the bottle (which could otherwise cause undesirable oxidative changes to the wine).

Installing the right combination of wine rack styles will create an efficient wine storage and display system, as well as maximize available space in a custom wine cellar.

There are a variety of wine storage and display racks available for the serious wine collector and the casual wine lover.  Wine racks come in different sizes, and are available in single, double, and triple-depth configurations.

Custom wine cellar racks are made out of exotic wood species, or high-quality metal pieces.  Wooden wine racks are rustic in appearance and convey an old-world appeal to a wine storage room.  Wine cellar racks made from metal are perfect for a contemporary-themed wine room.

So what are the latest trends in wine racking?

High Reveal Display Row with LED Lighting System

High Reveal Display Row with LED Lighting

High Reveal Display Row with LED Lighting

One of the most interesting trends in wine racking today is the addition of horizontal display rows to wine storage racks.

Wine cellar racks with high-reveal display rows are not only great devices for showcasing wines, but also excellent management tools.  They display wine bottles at a 15-degree angle, which allows the cork to maintain contact with the wine.

Horizontal display rows are usually found in the middle row of a wine cellar.  This layout allows for the storage of wines above and below the display area.

Installing soft light emitting diodes, or an LED lighting system, gives a dramatic flair to the display row, and highlights the different wine selections that are laid out along the angled shelf.

In addition, this design feature makes it easy for the wine collector to find a particular wine, and read the wine labels.

Horizontal Display for Large Format Bottles

For wine collectors who have a sizable collection of large format bottles, horizontal display racks are the perfect wine storage solution.  Large bottles (e.g. magnums, double magnums, etc.) are stored in a label-forward orientation.

Depending on the depth of the racking system, it can accommodate several large format wine bottles per row.  The horizontal placement of bottles promotes ease of identification and perusal of wine labels.

Diamond, X, and Rectangular Bins for Bulk Wine Storage

Diamond, X, and Rectangular Wine Storage Bins

Wood Wine Cellar Racks: Diamond, X, and Rectangular Wine Storage Bins

Diamond bins, X-bins, and rectangular bins are ideal for storing wines in bulk.  These wine-racking bins can accommodate wine bottles of different sizes.

Wine collectors can also consolidate their wine bottles into different groups, and/or organize them in cases.

These stylish wine cellar racks maximize wine storage space by storing bottles one on top of the other.  The space between and around the stacked bottles allows for maximum airflow.

Quarter Round Display and Curved Corner Wine Display Racks

Quarter Round Wine Display Racks

Quarter Round Wine Display Racks

Quarter-round wine display racks make for an excellent end cap to a wine racking system.

Although they can be used as a storage device for ready-to-drink wines, they are best for displaying decanters, as well as decorative items and artistic pieces.

For a smooth and seamless transition between walls, true radius curved corner wine display racks are the ideal display solution.

Corner racks with a true radius curve not only utilize corner spaces but also create a continuous flow of wine cellar racks, without any sharp corners.

Enhanced Structural and Design Features for Wine Rack Stability and Visual Appeal

Quality is what’s important in every product.  Manufacturers of wine storage racks make sure that their products are of high quality, to meet today’s demands for a long-term wine storage facility.

Enhanced Wine Rack Stability

Enhanced Wine Rack Stability

To ensure structural integrity and add strength to the wine racking frame, wooden wine racks must be constructed with dado spacer bars.

These bars ensure that the vertical ladder structure aligns fittingly.

A toe kick height of 1 1/2″ is required to raise the wine rack off the floor.  This helps prevent unsteady movement and consequently protects the bottles from breakage.

Hand-sanded rough edges and contours are a must for every wooden wine rack.  This removes splinters and prevents scratches on wine labels when placing or removing wine bottles.

Various stains and finish options are available to match any interior décor and to promote design consistency.  Choices of wood stains include Wheat, Early American, Chestnut, Chappo, Rustic, and Cherry.

Combining Metal Wine Racks with Wooden Wine Racks

Wooden wine cellar racks are unquestionably versatile when it comes to enhancing residential or commercial spaces, and it does not hurt to add a bit of a modern touch if a contemporary look is desired.

Metal-based wine racks are a great match for the modern-themed wine cellar space.  Common metal pieces used in creating metal wine racks are stainless steel and wrought iron.

Their sleek and elegant appearance creates an eye-catching display and presentation of wine bottles.  Metal wine racks not only provide multiple design benefits but also promote space optimization.

Metal Wine Racks & Wood Wine Racks in a Cellar

Metal Wine Cellar Racks & Wood Wine Racks in a Cellar

The most popular type of metal wine rack is VintageView metal wine racking, which makes use of stainless steel pegs in order to create a visually appealing storage and display of the finest wine bottles.

These pegs are mounted on the wall, and cradle wine bottles in a label forward orientation.

When they are combined with wooden wine racks and shelves, the effect is absolutely stunning and unique.

Take a look at the photo of a residential wine cellar on the left, wherein VintageView metal wine racks were combined with wooden wine cellar racks.

The advantages of using VintageView wine rack display systems are easy bottle recognition and inventory.  This wine-racking solution has an open design that promotes maximum air flow between bottles.

Customized Metal Wine Racking Design

VintageView Metal Wine Racks - Floor to Ceiling

VintageView Metal Wine Cellar Racks – Floor to Ceiling

VintageView metal racking solutions are offered in custom heights, to fit any available space in a wine storage room.

They are available in different depths (e.g. single, double, triple), which can greatly increase the storage capacity of a custom wine cellar.

The floor-to-ceiling mount from Vintage View is a racking design that ascends from the floor to the ceiling.

The metal wine racks are securely fastened to the ceiling and floor and can be placed anywhere in a wine cellar (such as in the middle of the room, or right next to the glass windows).

Black Pearl, Antique Brown, Brushed Nickel, and Rustic Red are some of the metal-plated finishes available, to provide Vintage View metal racking a custom appearance.

All of these wine rack features and trends are an advantage to wine collectors and wine business owners.  These essentially spell what you are paying for, and how wines should be taken care of.
