Residential Custom Wine Cellars in CA: Ideal Storage Places for Wine

The ideal temperature range for proper wine storage is between 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Wines should also be kept in a place wherein the humidity is kept at around 70%. There are many ways to store wine through which these specific conditions are provided, but the ideal place is in a residential custom wine cellar in Orange County, California. Custom wine cellars come in 3 different types:

1. Above-Ground Custom Wine Cellars in California

Above-ground custom wine cellars in Orange County, California are quite difficult to build because among all the other types of wine cellars, these require more insulation. Above-ground cellars should have insulation with a rating of at least R-13 for their walls, while the floor and ceiling should have at least R-19 insulation installed. Vapor barriers should also be properly installed on the above-cellar walls.

Wooden wine cellar doors may be used for above-ground custom wine cellars, but an R-30 insulation should be tacked at the back of the door. Ideally, a more efficient kind of wine cellar door should be used for above-ground wine storage rooms.

There are no specific wine rack requirements for above-ground home wine cellars. The important thing is that the wine racks chosen should be able to keep the wine bottles in a horizontal position, and slightly slant to keep the corks in contact with the wine. Wine corks need to be kept moist, otherwise they shrink and allow air to get in the bottle. When air gets in contact with the wine, oxidation occurs. Oxidation causes wines to taste like rust.

Above-ground custom wine cellars in CA should be constructed in shady areas so that the cooling systems inside will work more efficiently.

2. Underground Residential Wine Cellars in California

Underground residential wine cellars in CA are one of the most common types of wine cellars. The easy way to build this kind of wine storage room is by buying a pre-built one with lighting, racking, and a cooling system. The more difficult route is by hiring a contractor to build the underground custom wine cellar under your house.

Insulation and vapor barriers should be installed in this kind of wine cellar. The amount of insulation to be installed varies depending on the climate and soil of the region. The climate and the soil of the place can affect how well your home wine cellar can effectively cool your wines.

3. Closet Home Wine Cellars in California

Closet home wine cellars are a good way to maximize space. If you have limited space available, you do not need free-standing wine cabinets and wine fridges. All you need is to turn one of your closets into a wine rack. Simply measure the dimensions of the closet that you plan to turn into a custom wine cellar. Decide on what kind of wine racks you intend to use, like diamond bins, rectangular bins, or square bins. You might also want to have shelves for case storage.

Wine Storage Solutions: Seek Professional Advice

Whichever residential custom wine cellar in CA you choose to have constructed, it is important that you first seek the advice of a professional wine cellar designer and builder, so that you can be sure that your custom wine cellar is efficiently capable of providing the ideal conditions for wine to age tastefully.

California Wine Storage Solutions for Large Format Bottles

The demand for residential wine cellars in many parts of the world, including California, is increasing continually. This is because of the many benefits a wine cellar has to offer, such as proper wine storage, increased home value, a great entertainment area, and additional beauty for your home.

LARGE BOTTLES

These benefits can be maximized by having your wine cellar custom-built. Customizing your wine cellars will not only allow your personal style to be incorporated into the design but will also fit any type and size of wine bottle you intend to store and age.

Wine rack kits are usually constructed to fit standard 375ml and 750ml bottles. There are large format bottles that are believed to allow for better wine aging, resulting in quality wine. Wines stored in large format bottles are ideal for long-term aging because of the low ratio of oxygen to wine.

If you want to include large-format bottles in your collection, I will provide you with some tips.

Custom Wine Cellar Racks

One of the best benefits of building a wine cellar is the customization options that it offers. Unique bottle sizes can be accommodated when you customize the wine racks in your wine cellar. Keep in mind that allocation for these wine bottle sizes must be incorporated early in the design phase to avoid problems.

You can opt for custom-built large-format individual wine racks to fit your large-format bottles. You may also request your chosen California wine cellar designer to add some rectangular openings in your wine racking.

Superior California Wine Cellar Designs by Coastal

It is not surprising that in California, homes, restaurants, bars, and other commercial establishments prefer their wine cellars to be custom-built. Custom wine cellars are designed and built according to their own creative ideas and requirements. After all, California is where a great bulk of grapes are grown in various vineyards across the state and where tasty and popular wines are made. It is not surprising that locals would include wine collecting and wine drinking in their past times.

One company in California that is dependable when it comes to building distinctive custom wine cellars is Coastal Custom Wine Cellars. Recently, the talented and innovative people of Coastal have built superior custom wine cellars for various local clients, both for residential and commercial use.

Coto de Caza, Orange County Residential Wine Cellar

One project was in Coto De Caza in Orange County. This was a residential design project and is considered prestigious in its entirety. This beautiful California wine cellar is located under a stairwell which is quite long and uneven. However, the designer maximized the space, and interestingly enough the maximum number of wine bottles it can house reached 514.

The wine racking was maximized, thus increasing the storage capacity. The wine racks were custom-built in Mahogany and were painted with a high-quality stain and finish.

The wine cellar door was also custom-built according to the sketch made by the owner. The Tuscan 8’ wine cellar door is made of clear alder wood and has a rustic stain that complements the wine racks inside the wine cellar and the rest of the house on the outside. A bronze finish was used for the wrought iron design of the wine cellar door.

For the refrigeration system, a ductless split type was used, and its evaporator, although inside the wine cellar, was covered. The condenser was placed outdoors.

Aliso Viejo, Orange County Residential Wine Cellar

Another project completed by Coastal is the Aliso Viejo residential wine cellar. The existing family room and the garage were merged to be transformed into a wine cellar. Since this is a big wine room, a total bottle capacity of 1083 was achieved.

The wine cellar entryway must be able to seal in the cool temperature for the proper storage and aging of wines. For this project, dual pane Barolo glass wine cellar doors were used to ensure efficiency and high visibility of the wine bottles displayed inside. This type of door also provides a visual feast as the wines inside can be seen from different vantage points from the dining and entertainment areas, adding conversation pieces among guests and family alike.

The wine cooling system used is a ductless split system. The evaporator was placed above the entryway which makes it almost unseen by guests. The evaporator component was installed outdoors.

Cooperage countertops were used to add a special and unique feature to the overall look of the wine cellar. Dual beer taps were also installed, adding another feature for the owners and guests to enjoy.

Interestingly enough, the owners opted to install a locking system for security purposes. Serious collectors spend thousands of dollars for wines, thus this kind of request from California residential wine cellar owners is not uncommon.

Furthermore, the owners of this particular wine cellar were ensured by the added capability to secure the wine cellar from the curious hands of children when the parents are not around.

Nikita Restaurant, Malibu Commercial Wine Cellar

Another project of Coastal Custom Wine Cellar is a commercial wine storage for a restaurant in Malibu. For an upscale restaurant, it is a great idea to display wine so as to attract the attention of diners while at the same time storing their collection.

Nikita Restaurant is located a few meters from Surfrider and the Malibu Pier, with its open and large windows offering an excellent view of Carbon Beach. A great view and a wide array of wines are the perfect combination for many locals and tourists.

For this project, Coastal emphasized the racking system. To be able to showcase the restaurant’s wine collection, the designers used the wall space for maximum storage and display.

The wine racks were made of metal with a black finish, creating an elegant look that appeals to its clientele. They are arranged in rows with 3 ft and 4 ft heights to maximize available wall space. This design allows one brand or kind of wine to be grouped in a row for a unified look and easy retrieval. The wine labels are also easily visible which adds efficiency to the whole design.

Below the wine racks are X-cube bins intended for bulk storage to offer both aesthetic and economic advantages that can be pleasing to the clientele’s eyes and the restaurant’s revenue. A modern style fits a modern and picturesque environment without sacrificing function and beauty.
