The Laguna Hills Residential Custom Wine Cellar Design
Effective Wine Storage Solution Built in Laguna Hills, California
The 471-bottle capacity residential custom wine cellar in Orange County was designed to have a display arch, diamond bin storage, and high reveal and horizontal display rows.
1. Custom Wine Racks
There are various options for wine racks in California. They can be made from a variety of materials, like wood, steel, and plastic. But for this Orange County Wine Cellar Project, wooden wine racks were chosen. More specifically, the client wanted the custom wine racks to be made from Mahogany, with a natural clear finish applied.
The space available was very limited, and this was one of the challenges that Coastal faced. Since the room was only 60 inches wide, with an offset entry door close to the left wall, the wine cellar designer together with the client decided to maximize limited space by installing 6” deep horizontal, label forward display racks on the left-hand wall. These wine racks were made to accommodate a variety of wine bottles, from standard to magnum sizes. The rest of the wine racking was 13 ½ inches deep, and an arched tasting area was included right across the entryway. This tasting area had a horizontal display underneath, for featuring selected wines. High-reveal rows that tilted bottles at an angle so that the labels could be visible were on the sides of the arch. These high-reveal display rows continued up to the right-hand side wall and included high-capacity standard wine racks. Additionally, a central diamond bin case storage area was included below. At the top of the cellar wall, the cellar builders made a louvered grill from the same wood used for the racks. This grill was intended to conceal the wine cellar cooling unit.
2. Custom Wine Cellar Door
Most people think that a wine cellar door is a mere entryway to the wine storage room. Actually, the wine cellar door plays a more important role than just that. It keeps the temperature and humidity inside the custom wine cellar constant. This is why it should be made from durable materials. For the Laguna Hills wine cellar, dual pane glass with chestnut-stained Mahogany framing was used.
3. Wine Cellar Refrigeration System
Different home custom wine cellars in California need different wine cellar cooling units because each one has different wine storage requirements. US Cellar Systems determined the appropriate wine cellar refrigeration unit for the custom wine cellar in Orange County, California, and it was an RM 3600 split-type custom wine cellar cooling system.
The RM 3600 cooling unit had its evaporator installed and concealed behind the louvered grill in the custom wine racks. Its condenser was installed in another room. Since the cooling unit has a split-type configuration, there was very minimal noise inside the residential wine cellar.
