Had your wine storage space built, but still can’t seem to find the right cooling unit suitable for it? This is a common problem among wine collectors. Since wine rooms vary in many factors, such as size, location, and capacity, the appropriate HVAC equipment for each structure varies as well. The wine cabinets, for example, of a client in Laguna Beach had very unique needs. It required a refrigeration system that would allow the use of extra small ducting. The experts from Arctic Metalworks Inc. were able to install a customized cooling system setup that would meet his cabinet’s distinctive needs.

Their recent project, for example, was in a luxury home in Laguna Beach in Orange County, California. The client had four wine cabinets that had distinctive storage requirements, and the technicians from Arctic had to install a system that could effectively provide cooling to these cabinets.
The wine cabinets in this project were sealed by glass doors. The area inside each cabinet was very small, and there was little space to vent air in and out the structure. Standard-sized ducting would not fit inside the cabinets. The challenge for the HVAC experts from Arctic was to set up a refrigeration system that would allow them to use special-sized – smaller than the usual – ducting.
Customized Refrigeration System for the Laguna Beach Wine Cabinets
Arctic Metalworks Inc. is well-trusted by clients because of the quality services they provide. Their team of experts consistently make sure that the refrigeration system they install in any wine room is capable of meeting the individual storage requirements of the space. In this Laguna Beach project, their HVAC technicians mounted a Unico High Pressure cooling unit, which was a piece of equipment that allowed the use of smaller-than-standard ducts.
Setting Up a Ducted Split Type Cooling System
The cooling equipment that was chosen for this project was a ducted split type system. In this kind of setup, the refrigeration unit was installed in a separate mechanical room.
Ducts were used to carry cool air from the HVAC unit into the cabinets. Another set of ducts vented the warm air out from the storage space. This was the most ideal configuration, considering the limited area inside the cabinets for installing equipment.
Special-Sized Ducts that were Smaller than Standard
Two-inch ducts were used for the Unico High Pressure cooling system. A total of eight ducts were set up. For each cabinet, two ducts were allocated – one was a supply and the other was a return. Supply ducts were the ones that carried coolness into the wine cabinets. The return ducts brought warm air out of the storage space and into a separate room.
The Unico cooling equipment uses a high pressure forced air system, which is necessary to push cool air through the extra thin ducting.
Refrigeration System Accessories Installed
A few additional features were included in the setup of the wine cabinet refrigeration system. A thermostat was installed on the wall and set to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
A remote sensor was installed in the wine cabinets too. This accessory was included to make sure that the temperature is maintained at the ideal levels with minimal to no fluctuation.
